This is the precise hour when the South African bushveld changes register. Photographed near Hoedspruit, at the foot of the great escarpment, the scene sets two worlds against each other: below, the bush already claimed by dusk, a dark, unbroken swell from which the crown of a solitary tree emerges; above, a sky still incandescent, running through every shade from apricot to ashen pink. Between the two, the bluish line of the mountains, reduced to a shadow-theatre cut-out, seems suspended in the evening haze. The composition is one of great economy: three horizontal bands, a single vertical motif, and that end-of-day light doing all the work.
