The image is built in horizontal strata \u2014 the deep green of the open sea, then the fronts of foam advancing in layered lacework, the translucent water sliding over the wet sand, and finally the orange beach, hemmed at the bottom of the frame by the shadows of tufts of vegetation. At the water’s edge, almost imperceptible, a figure walks along the sand, followed by its elongated shadow: it is this figure that gives the spectacle its measure and turns abstraction into an inhabited landscape.
